Not only are the topics engaging and diverse, but they are also very practical. It's crucial for learners to acquire skills applicable to real-world situations. Whether the focus is on speaking, listening comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, writing, or pronunciation, each Fluentize food ESL lesson plan is tailored to foster new language abilities across all proficiency levels from A2 to C1.

To sum it up, our mission is to offer topics that are not just contemporary, pertinent, and practical, but also those innovative topics not commonly found in other ESL teaching resources.

Effective Structure in Our Food ESL Lessons

One important aspect we focus on in Fluentize is how we structure each food ESL lesson plan. We carefully create each lesson so that one part leads to the next without any complicated stage. This way, students find it easier to build on what they learn, step by step. It's all about helping them pick up skills in the best way possible.

We really think that organizing our lesson materials well makes a big difference in how students learn. With well-planned lessons, students find it easier to understand what they're learning. And for you, the teacher, it becomes simpler to help them move in the right direction and achieve great results. That's why we put a lot of thought into how we put together each food ESL lesson plan. We want to make sure that every lesson not only teaches well but also connects with the students effectively.

To ensure this, each food ESL lesson plan is filled with practical examples that relate directly to real-life situations involving food. This approach not only reinforces language learning but also keeps students interested and engaged. By blending practicality with engaging content, we aim to make each lesson not just informative but also an enjoyable experience for both the student and the teacher.

Authentic, Engaging Content

The last point is that all of our ESL lessons about food are based on engaging, online videos. Given that video is one of the most engaging content formats to use as an ESL lesson resource, we pride ourselves on using online videos as the base for all of our lessons.

When used properly, video can have a strong, positive impact on students and enhance their learning experience. Videos provide students with authentic material. The benefit of this is that the speakers in the videos tend to use natural language — it’s not graded down to cater to language learners. This provides students with an important, real-world element in an ESL classroom, which pays off in real-world communication.

Carefully-Selected Videos

We take extra care in choosing the videos for our lessons. We know that not just any online video is good for a lesson plan. We look at things like how long the video is, what kind of animation it has, and if it’s fun and interesting. We make sure the videos we pick for our ESL lessons grab your students' attention, spark their interest, and get them excited about learning.

Whether your students are pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, or advanced, our ESL food lesson plans are especially useful in helping students who work across a range of food sectors, or study certain food fields for a future career. Alternatively, perhaps you have a student who is simply interested in eating out, and wants to have lessons geared towards food topics that interest them personally.

No matter what your students are interested in, whether it's their job or just personal curiosity, at Fluentize, you'll find ESL lessons covering a wide range of food topics. These include subjects like veganism, dieting, different types of restaurants, how to make healthy recipes, and foods from around the world.

With a supplementary video to accompany each of these food ESL lesson plans, both teachers and students get the best of both worlds — high-quality ESL lesson materials and authentic, engaging video content.

Regardless of the lesson format, each of our ESL environment lesson plans comes with the following structural parts:

Preview Activities

Our preview activities consist of engaging lesson introductions and discussion questions or conversation topics about the environment. The overall goal of this section is to engage students on the topic of the lesson and prepare them for the video.

Our preview sections also come with vocabulary activities or prediction-based exercises to contextualize the theme of the lesson. This also helps prepare students for the upcoming parts of the lesson.

Listening & Viewing Comprehension Activities

Our listening and viewing comprehension activities are based on an online video, and designed to train students’ listening skills. We implement a wide range of listening-for-gist and listening-for-detail activities in this section, including short answers, true/false statements, event sequencing, multiple choice, among many other activity types. The goal in this part of the lesson is to ensure that students understand the content they watched.

Viewing Follow-Up Activities

Our viewing follow-up activities come right after the video viewing phase of the lesson, and are designed to engage students in discussion about the video they watched. This could include their opinion about the video, how useful it was, or any other relevant questions about the topic.

In addition, the main goal of this section is to prepare students for the final activation phase of the lesson. These often include activities on vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation.

You’ll find that this section often includes quotes from speakers in the video, which we build upon and use as the base for a variety of useful activities for your students. As mentioned, the skills they practice in this part prepare them for the activation phase of the lesson as described below.

Communicative Activations

An “activation” is simply an activity that is developed a bit more in detail and has students put certain skills into practice in some kind of real-world, communicative, and contextualized scenario. We do our best to make our activations engaging and realistic, as well as fun, for both teacher and students.

Some example types of activations you’ll see are role plays, interviews, creative writing, planning, presenting, researching, among many others.

An example of a communicative activation in one of our ESL food lesson plans is described as follows:

In this lesson plan on the science beihnd the "Impossible Burger", students engage in a many discussions about vegetarianism and veganism, focusing on personal choices and societal trends.

They start by debating whether the necessity to personally butcher meat would increase the number of vegetarians or vegans, delving into how direct involvement in meat processing might affect their dietary choices. This leads into conversations about loyalty to specific food brands or restaurants, where students reflect on their preferences and what drives these choices, be it taste, quality, ethical considerations, or other factors.

They also share their personal experiences with vegetarianism or veganism, discussing any types of meat they miss or don’t miss, and how their lives would change if they switched diets.

The discussion then shifts to the popularity of vegetarianism and veganism in their local areas, including the presence of related restaurants. Students also imagine interviewing the CEO of Impossible Foods, developing questions that probe into the company’s products and philosophy. This stage aims to encourage critical thinking and articulate expression on contemporary food choices and ethical considerations.

While we use a wide range of activation styles, this is just an example of one you might expect to find in one of our lesson plans.

Quiz & Review

In each lesson plan, there is a quiz and review section at the end that repeats and covers some of the most important material, activities, and skills in the lesson plan. As of 2022, all of our lessons also include a section at the end of the quiz & review section for “lesson reflection”. This means that students can discuss a few questions mostly focusing on their experience with the lesson — what they learned, found difficult, or enjoyed about the lesson.
