Branding & Marketing ESL Lesson Plan description

OBJECTIVE & OVERVIEW

This free branding and marketing ESL lesson plan contains activities, worksheets, and digital materials for C1 advanced students. By the end of the lesson, students will have a deeper understanding of branding, be able to actively use important language about branding, and be able to develop a brand profile for a company and pitch this brand profile to a potential investor.

PREVIEW & DISCUSSION

This ESL lesson plan on marketing and branding starts by students exploring the important but subtle differences between a company versus a brand, as well as marketing versus branding. They'll engage in discussion questions about marketing and branding, in addition to other conversation activities. In the activities, students explore their favorite companies and brands associated with them.

VIDEO & LISTENING COMPREHENSION

After another short discussion about the impacts of brands, students watch a video about the psychology and neuroscience of branding. Students listen for some key information about a study done at Duke University, and do an activity in which they fill in the gaps for words they hear in the video. The final activity in the viewing comprehension section is focused on another study done that involves iPhone users and Samsung Galaxy users.

DISCUSSION & BRANDING VOCABULARY TASKS

To follow up the video, students discuss and share some more thoughts on marketing and branding. They then proceed to explore some more vocabulary terms related to marketing and branding. They’ll do an activity in which they learn about and discuss vocabulary such as:

  • a buzzword
  • a brand narrative
  • brand identity
  • a slogan
  • a unique selling proposition

All of these terms will provide students with the support they need in order to conduct the final activation phase of the lesson, which is described below.

BRANDING & BRAND IDENTITY PROJECT

In this brand development project, students participate in activities in which they create both company and brand profiles. Then, they have to pitch their brand profiles in an engaging way in a role play type of scenario to a potential investor (to a classmate, or you, the teacher).
